The scientific principles and precautions of cold water bathing for weight loss
Cold water baths.
Cold water baths consume a significant amount of energy, primarily from the breakdown of fat. Therefore, cold water baths can reduce fat accumulation. Regular cold water baths have a good weight-loss effect.
We know that cold water baths have a beneficial effect on the nervous and cardiovascular systems. When the skin comes into contact with cold water, under the control of the nerves, the blood vessels in the skin constrict rapidly, their diameter decreasing. A large amount of blood is driven into the internal organs and deep tissues, while the blood vessels in the internal organs dilate. Subsequently, the blood vessels in the skin also dilate, and a large amount of fluid flows from the internal organs to the surface of the body. Thus, cold water baths constantly consume a lot of energy, which must be supplied by the continuous breakdown of fat. Undoubtedly, the body becomes thinner.
Cold water baths can not only help with weight loss, but also prevent colds, bronchitis, pneumonia, tonsillitis, and other diseases. They can also improve blood circulation in the skin, enhance the nutritional supply to subcutaneous tissues, increase the secretion of sebaceous glands, and make the skin more supple, smooth, and elastic. At the same time, cold water baths can reduce cholesterol deposition in blood vessels, helping to prevent arteriosclerosis. Furthermore, under the influence of cold water, the functions of the nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, and digestive systems are strengthened, and the functions of other organs are also improved accordingly, thus promoting an overall improvement in bodily functions.
What precautions should be taken when using cold water baths for weight loss? Dr. Zhang believes the following points should be noted:
(1) Beforehand, consult a doctor to check if cold water baths are suitable for weight loss.
(2) Cold water baths for weight loss should begin in summer, continue through summer and autumn, and persist until winter and spring, ideally without interruption throughout the year.
(3) After bathing, dry your body with a towel immediately, especially in winter, until your skin turns red. For those with weaker constitutions who are trying to lose weight, be sure to close doors and windows to avoid catching a cold when taking a cold water bath in winter. First, do some relaxation exercises to warm up your whole body, then pour cold water over your body while rubbing it until it turns red and warm before taking the cold water bath. After bathing, in addition to quickly drying and rubbing your body with a towel until it turns red, it is best to drink a bowl of hot porridge and warm yourself in the blankets. Let your body sweat slightly. This way, you will not catch a cold.
(4) When the body first comes into contact with cold water, the whole body feels cold and shivers, this is the "cold period"; after a while, a large amount of blood returns to the surface of the body, and the skin turns slightly red, this is the "warm period"; if the cold water bath is too long, the muscles will contract violently and shiver, which is the "shivering period". Generally, when using cold water baths for weight loss, you should not extend to this period, but should end the bath during the warm period.
