What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a relatively new surgical procedure developed in the 1980s in foreign body contouring surgery. Although it can be performed anywhere on the body, it is most effective for removing excess fat from the abdomen.

Compared to traditional skin and fat removal surgery, which has been used for many years, it has advantages such as less trauma, less scarring, fewer complications, safety, satisfactory results, and greater acceptance by obese patients.

The method mainly involves removing excess fat tissue through a small incision in the skin using negative pressure to improve body shape and function. It is currently one of the newest body contouring techniques.

This surgery is most suitable for patients with localized fat deposits but good skin elasticity and no significant skin sagging. If there is significant skin sagging, a skin removal procedure should be performed simultaneously for better aesthetic results.

Luxville University plastic surgery expert Froman believes that while this method is effective and fast, it is not without its problems. One is the potential for facial contour distortion. When too much fat is removed or the process is uneven, an uneven surface can occur, leading to asymmetry in the body, such as legs of different sizes. Secondly, it can cause nerve damage. Some people experience numbness, tingling, and burning sensations after surgery, which can last for months. Thirdly, if too much fat is removed, a large amount of body fluid will be lost; if not replenished in time, fainting may occur.

How did a 600-pound (300 catties) obese person lose weight?

In Kent, Washington, USA, there was a 41-year-old obese man who originally weighed 288 kg and was 2.1 meters tall. He was bedridden and unable to turn over on his own. Due to his extreme obesity, his knees were under constant pressure, making it impossible for him to stand or work.

In November 1984, he mustered the courage to seek medical help. He was diagnosed with a digestive system abnormality and it was decided to remove three-quarters of his stomach and connect it to part of his intestines. For the next two and a half years, he consumed only 400 calories per day. After more than two years of effort, he finally lost 198.5 kilograms.

Due to the drastic weight loss, a sack-like mass of skin remained on his chest, hanging down to his knees, requiring further surgery to remove it. This mass of skin alone weighed 8.5 kilograms.

Soon, he will also need knee surgery to live a normal life. He has already spent $300,000 on his weight loss efforts.
